Meet The Knotty Bride

If you haven’t already become a crazy fan of the awesome wedding blog The Knotty Bride, well get a move on!!!  It is seriously one the best, funniest, most entertaining, addicting blogs out there!  Even if you aren’t a bride you will become hooked!

If you don’t know already, a few months ago we were offered the incredible honor of being part of “vendor love” on the The Knotty Bride.  I was very excited because I was so impressed by her style and writing voice. I found myself constantly looking forward to the next post.  What a compliment that she loved our work and wanted us to be part of her guide!

So I thought, what better way to tell the world, than to introduce the woman behind The Knotty Bride, Alison.  Here is what I knew before the interview:

-She is an incredible writer.

-She has a great sense of humor.

-I look forward to her emails and tweets just for the smile on my face.

-I wish she lived here so we could be bestties!

Want to know more?  Here you go!  (Photographers, listen up!  Great advice for getting your weddings published!)

How did The Knotty Bride start?

I’ve always been one of those girls who has a slightly different perspective from most brides, in that I never dreamed about my wedding and didn’t discover what an IMMENSE THRILL it would be until I actually dug in and started exploring my options.  So, I’m the kind of person who truly had to start from scratch, and I’ve discovered so much about who I am and what gets me revved.  That’s the whole point of TKB.  And it’s super fun for me, still, to this day… and I’ve been doing this since October 2009.  I feel so lucky to be able to call it my full time job.

I’m also the daughter of two very empathic people, and so my desire to figure out a way both to help people figure s*** out, coupled with my obsession with style and all things related to love and celebrations made TKB an inevitability.  That’s why TKB is so focused on the realities of life, love and relationships, and why I like to speak from the heart in each and every post.

What is it that makes The Knotty Bride different from other wedding blogs?

I created TKB with the express goal of keeping it personal, wholly unique and, above all else, a gathering of things I would *actually recommend to friends.*

We love sharing amazing real weddings, but we’re much more than that, and that – aside from the saucy language – is one of the main things that makes TKB special, in my estimation.  Personally, one of the things I thrill over is getting to premiere new collections to our readers.  (Did you see our Sarah Seven premiere last week?  I was so excited about that one.  Hope you liked it!  And we’re doing a giveaway with Sarah in early April!!!!!  Whaaaat?  I know!  Killer:)

Getting back on track… I’m not into featuring things I wouldn’t consider doing/wearing myself.  That’s important to me, and I find it’s the only surefire way to maintain a high standard of quality on the blog.  I get so many cool emails telling me that’s how it’s seen, too, and I can’t tell you how great that is to hear.  It’s also great reinforcement, and encourages me to continue keeping these looong hours of gathering, writing and curating the best possible wedding inspiration I can possibly drum up and bring to my readers’ collective faces.  It’s truly my daily challenge, and I thrive on challenges.  (I have a slightly short attention span:)

All of that being said, photographers definitely make it easy for me when they submit such amazing work to TKB day in, day out.  Every time I receive a new submission, open it, and realize that I love it, it’s like opening a gift on Christmas morning.  Seriously.  Fresh zip files are my Tickle Me Elmo (I think I’ve badly dated myself with that reference).  I pretty much get to open a few Christmas gifts every hour or so.  I must say, I don’t feel worthy of this gift opening marathon I call my “work.”

A picture of the Knotty Bride and her handsome honey pie!:)

How do you choose your featured weddings?

It’s simple, really.  Details, details, details.  Though image quality is paramount.  I loooove me a photographer who knows how to work with light.  It’s almost a turn on.  I’ll hush up with that; I know we’re not in TKBland right now.;)

What’s a common mistake vendors make when submitting weddings?

They don’t submit their best detail shots.  Details are what sell me.  And it’s always smart to send at least 25 images.  With TKB, it’s 50.  This way, if we go with that wedding, we’ve already got all the images we need, so less back and forth with the email and the files and the this and the that.  You understand.

What is vendor love all about?

I was blogging and blogging and blogging along, and it wasn’t long before I started to get emails on a daily basis asking for vendor recommendations.  It was fun, but tiring to recommend on an individual basis.  But the thing is – and my readers know this – what they want, they get.  Hence, the guide was born.

In brief, Vendor Love is our highly, and I mean highly, edited guide containing only the best vendors out there – aka, vendors we love personally and know our beloved readers will, too.  It’s all about giving readers a safe playground where they can search for everything they’ll need to plan their ideal wedding, all the while knowing that the vendors through which they’re sifting are among the very best in service and quality.  We like our preferred vendors with a side of heart and a dash of personality, too.  … Which should explain why we love you guys so much.:)

Candice’s note: awwwwwwwww……

What’s your favorite part about being a blogger?

The brides.  The vendors.  The events.  I’m sorry, but I can’t name just one thing!  Every day, I get to connect with incredibly kind, hugely talented, super funny people, and I have this thing for people… I kind of love them.  So I love this.

Also, I get to write about anything I want for as long as I want, and when I’m done, no hands me back my paper with the words “TOO WORDY” in red ink.

What’s 1 thing you’d like us all to know about you?

I’m exactly the same in person as I am on the blog.  I have no idea what that means, either.:)

Get the Buzz | A Discreet DSLR Reminder

Ever since the rage for shooting weddings with DSLR’s began, the 12 minute recording limit has been a constant source of annoyance. This is especially true for anyone who was already used to having 60 minutes or more with tape. But we all waited patiently in the hopes that this limit would eventually be removed. Yet several years and camera models later and it’s still with us .. an Achilles heel in an otherwise amazing line of camera gear.

Well, a few weeks ago I mentioned on Facebook that I was trying out something new at a wedding. I promised that if it worked out well I would share it with all of you. I’m happy to say my idea worked out great and I’m excited to share it.

The idea originally popped in my head while shooting a wedding a few months ago. I was putting my iPhone on silent in preparation for the ceremony and suddenly I got the idea that maybe I could use the iPhone’s timer app and vibration to serve as a reminder for the 12 minute time limit. Essentially I would set the timer for around 10 minutes and then when I felt the phone vibrating I would know it was time to reset the camera’s record function. So I ran a quick test and discovered that even with the iPhone on silent the audible alarm would sound with the timer app. Unacceptable. There was also the issue that I sometimes don’t notice the vibration of the iPhone when it’s in my pocket. Also unacceptable.

Fast forward a few weeks and I had a wedding coming up where we were shooting with more cameras than assistants. It was a last minute booking and I could only secure one assistant shooter to help out that day. So I was going to be running the bride camera on a tripod as well as jetting around getting creative shots via monopod/slider/steadicam with another camera. Now normally the 12 minute limit worries me more in the sense that my assistant shooters might forget about it, but this weekend I felt I could some help of my own. So I renewed my search for a solution and eventually found Gymboss.com.

By this time I had already done some exhaustive research of other timers and just hadn’t found anything I liked. They all had shortcomings in one way or another. But the Gymboss timer was different. It seemed like the perfect solution. But you never know until you can try something out in person. So with a leap of faith I ordered a pair of the timers and waited for their arrival.

The Gymboss timers showed up and I was instantly impressed with their small size and low weight, as well as how easy they were to set up. Each timer has a total of just 3 buttons, and it only took a minute to set them up with a repeating 10 minute interval on the vibrate setting (audible alarms are also possible, but obviously not ideal for a wedding situation). My biggest concern was with being able to notice the vibrating alarm, since as I already mentioned I often don’t notice my iPhone buzzing in my pocket. Sure enough, this proved to be a problem with the Gymboss timers as well. So I started experimenting with placing the Gymboss in other locations since it has a handy clip. Attaching to the sleeve didnt’ always work, but attaching the timer at the hip on my pants worked like a charm. I noticed the timer every time. I was also happy that the timer was so discreet and lightweight (powered by a single AAA battery). Just keep in mind that if you remove the battery you will have to reset the timer settings (takes maybe 20 seconds once you’ve done it before).

At the wedding that week I put the timers to the real test, and they worked like a charm. It was pretty freeing to not have to rely 100% on myself to remember to keep an eye on the record time, especially with 2 cameras under my command. So if you’re tired of stressing about the 12 minute time limit, take a look at the Gymboss timer. It might be just the buzz you’re looking for.

Dan Shallenberger - Nice find! I too have tried the iPhone timer, and same as you, sometimes I wouldn’t feel it vibrate. I tried keeping it in my shirt pocket, and I noticed it, but it also fell out twice. So, no go for the shirt pocket.

I’ll be ordering a couple of these very quickly. Thanks for sharing your find with everyone!March 21, 2011 – 10:27 am

Love it or Leave it | Taxes and Tweeting

Ok time for another episode of Love it or leave it….tell me….do you agree?

1.  Disrespectful people in the gym.  People, its a gym, get your workout on and quit chatting.  Or get out of my way.

2.  Taxes.  Especially self-employment tax.  Yes, I’m taxed for taking care of myself.

3.  People who don’t return calls or emails!  ARGH!

1.  When people tweet me.  ‘Cuz then I feel special!

2.  Late night sitcom reruns.  It’s kind of like comfort food.  And it’s amazing what you can learn.  Think of it as educational!

3. Shad, who came to our rescue and took care of our dogs while took a last minute business trip.  SAVIOR!
