Meet “us”

Life is crazy. Sometimes you love the ride .. and sometimes you want to get off. It twists and turns but you just keep rolling. You can’t predict it. You can’t control it. Life just happens. And that’s how one day you go from being an “I” or a “you” to becoming an “us”.

Meet “us”. We were meant to be together from the beginning. We didn’t have an easy start, but it made us hold on to each other that much more. It was trial by fire and we carried each other through it.

Now people can’t talk about either of us without mentioning both of us. We’re “Travis & Candice”. See how easily that rolls off the tongue? We rhyme! Could you get any more perfect that that? Even PB&J can’t claim that perfect a pairing.

Travis & Candice

But that’s not to say we’ve lost our individuality. If anything, we’re still quite the opposites.

Candice is the overwhelming one. The passionate one. The ambitious one. The messy one. She leaves things out. She talks too much .. sometimes too loud. Her brain works faster than she can talk. It’s constantly jumping from one thing to another, and it drives Travis crazy! She loves coffee (Starbucks if it’s available), Apple (not the fruit) and hanging out with friends (chocolate martini in hand).

Travis is the technical one. The logical one. The dedicated one. The clean one. He eats slow. He has a system for everything. He is methodical. He often tries to ‘tame’ Candice, and it drives her crazy! But inside there is also this little boy that loves to bang on drums, jump out of planes and rough-house with the dogs.

Now that brings us to our ‘kids’, Annie & Sam. We love them. Lots. Annie is our sweet and slightly lazy golden retriever that melts your heart with her pathetic puppy-dog eyes when she lays her head in your lap. Sam is our slightly paranoid and highly energetic silky terrier that can’t ever get enough play time. Annie loves to sleep. Sam loves to be chased. Sam will latch onto Annie’s tail to get her to ‘fight’, but Annie will let him cuddle up with her later and use her hip as a pillow. And at the end of of the day Annie lays down below us, her head on our feet. Sam turns into a little ball of mush who just longs to curl up in Candice’s lap for some cuddling and a good belly rub.

Annie & Sam

Together we are a team .. a partnership .. a hand to hold. So we hold hands as we walk, our dogs in tow. He makes her laugh and she grabs his butt. He responds in kind. The most perfect matches are really like puzzle pieces. They look totally different, but when they come together they fit .. and the picture is complete.

We may be different, but together we’re taking on this ride called life. Having someone in the seat beside you changes the journey. You don’t want off the ride anymore. You just want to hit the next turn together, and whether it’s high or low or a loop-de-loop, it’s an adventure to share.

This is who we are. This is why we do what we do. We capture the ride. We tell the story of others who take on the ride together. Because it’s the best way to ride … and it’s the best story to tell.

Travis - Caroline, thank you first of all for your kind words. As creative types you have no idea how much it means for us to hear that people love what we’re doing. We do what we do because WE love it, but it just means so much to hear that others do too. Thank you.

As for you and your dreams, the best advice I can give is to follow your passion. If you follow your passion in life you will find happiness. I went to school for biology and Candice went to school for business. In doing so, neither of us were listening to our hearts and following our passion. As a result, it took us a lot longer to get where we are today. But the the important part was that at some point, both of us decided to take that leap and follow our hearts.

How did we get where we are now? We just put ourselves into it and starting doing. The best thing you can do right now at 19 years old is study what others are doing and learn from it, and go out and get experience yourself. Don’t be afraid step out and do it. You have to try things to find out if you really like them. People just starting out often write us or call us and ask what camera to buy or what business name they should pick. But we tell them to go out and shoot with someone else .. someone whose work you admire and respect. Not only will you learn a lot from them, you’ll learn if you really like doing what they do. That’s very important.

Trust me, from the outside our job looks like a dream. It looks so fun and so easy, but it’s one of the hardest jobs out there. Owning your business alone requires a significant time investment. Eight years into it and we still work 50-70 hours a week. Now factor in that we shoot primarily weddings, which means we give up days on the weekend when our friends are out boating or golfing or relaxing at the beach. Then factor in that we’re filming and photographing an event where you don’t get second chances. You have to get it right the first time. And what if you get sick before the wedding (like I was last week)? Well, you have to suck it up and still go do an amazing job for the couple. It’s not an easy job by any stretch.

But it IS our passion, and that’s what makes it rewarding and worth it. So again, my best advice to you is to figure out what you are passionate about and pursue that with everything you have. Feel free to stay in touch, and thank you so much once again for loving what we do! d;-)

Caroline - Hello,

I don’t really know how to begin this message, but I guess I just wanted to tell you that your work is amazing. My name is Caroline, I’m 19 and currently attending a liberal arts school in the middle of nowhere… but these videos, and photos… the way you portray the world? It makes me want to quit school and learn how to do what you do. Because I think this may be the job I’ve been searching for.

I guess, what I’m really asking, is how did you get so good at what you do? What was your schooling like? Is there any chance I could dream to do what you do someday, or should I give it up now?
