On Top of the World | EventDV 25 All Star

About 2 months ago I received some pretty amazing news.  EventDV Magazine, an international publication that serves as THE authority for event filmaker information, informed me that I had been named one of the top 25 cinematographers in the world.

It was a huge honor to be listed among such talent, and it was pretty exciting too!

Yesterday something arrived via UPS that brought all that excitement and humility right back home.  I pulled out a knife and excitedly cut the tape on the box and then gingerly opened it up to see what lay inside.

Inside was a cover letter congratulating me again for making the Top 25 All Star list, and underneath that was a cool plaque proudly displaying that I was a member of the top 25.  Very cool and completely unexpected.

The truth of the matter is that when I receive an email or a voicemail from a bride gushing about how much they love their DVD’s, it’s way more fulfilling than any official award or honor.  I’ve received some physical letters from brides and grooms and mother’s of brides and so on and I keep them because they mean so much to me.  There just nothing quite like nailing it right on the biggest day of someone’s life.

That said, I’d be lying if I said this top 25 honor didn’t mean much to me.  There are some seriously-talented dudes on the list, and sometimes I still can’t believe I got to join them.  I mean “me” .. one of 25 in the entire world … it’s pretty crazy.  So thank you to everyone who made this honor possible.  You guys rock!  And thank you to all of our couples who inspired me in the first place.  You guys rock too!

Miami or Bust

Miami Skyline

Sometimes in life you just have to stop and figure out what you really want. You have to look at where you’ve been. You have to look at where you are. And you have to try and figure out where you want to go.

About 15 months ago we started on quest to figure out where we wanted to go. We knew where we’d been. We started our lives together here (in Boise). We started our family here (and yes, we know they are dogs). We discovered our passions here and then started our business here. We met so many of our amazing of friends here, and we shared a multitude of precious memories with family here.

We also knew where we were now. We were enjoying our life together and raising our ‘family’. Our business was more successful than we could possibly be thankful for. And we were still enjoying every moment we had with our family and friends.

But where did we want to go? That was the question that wrapped us up in lengthy conversations and kept us awake in the middle of the night. Deep down inside we knew the answer, but that didn’t make it easy to accept.

Miami was calling us .. both personally and professionally. And we heard the call. It was time to answer the call. It was time to go where we wanted to go. And that’s exactly what we’re doing. At the end of October we are relocating our personal life and our business to Miami, Florida.

We’re trading pine trees for palm trees. We’re trading snow for sand. We’re embracing an entirely different cultural perspective, and starting over both personally and professionally. It’s the scariest and most stressful journey we’ve undertaken together, but we believe it also holds the greatest reward.

We want to thank everyone in Boise for making the last decade such an amazing experience for us; family, friends, colleagues .. you’ve all been awesome. We’re going to miss each and every one of you, but we’re also excited to share the journey ahead. The road is laid out before us, and we’re about to step on the gas. We have a few more months here and we plan to make the most of it, and we also plan to stay in touch once we’re gone. Anyone who knows us knows that relationships are really important to us. We won’t forget you, and we hope you won’t forget us.

Melinda - This is so exciting!! I am so happy for your new journey. I will miss you, yet excited to come visit also.April 14, 2010 – 10:35 pm

Dana Salsbury - I could not be more excited for you. You had to get into a bigger metropolitan market to really maximize your potential. Plus you’re right on the edge of the Caribbean, and could market yourself for destination weddings.

You’ll miss the pine trees and the lakes, but Miami has unbelievable opportunities for you. One of my favorite verses is, “A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.” May this be the case for you.April 14, 2010 – 4:47 pm
